5 things to do in Tenerife

Are you planning your next holiday in the Canary Islands? Tenerife, known for its breathtaking landscapes and warm climate year-round, is more than just a sun-and-sand destination. For adventurous travellers, it offers a few of the most exciting activities you can do! The island is known for its diversity and experience options. We listed the 5 best things to do in Tenerife.

1. Scuba diving

Whether you're a first-time diver or a seasoned underwater explorer, diving in Tenerife is an unforgettable experience. Here's everything you need to know about why Tenerife should be on your dive bucket list and what makes diving here a top-rated activity for travellers. The position in the Atlantic Ocean makes the waters around the island an excellent diving area with clear waters, good visibility, and warm temperatures!

Diving is one of the most enlightening experiences you can have together, whether travelling alone, with a partner, or with older children. Few other activities can compare to the memories you make while exploring a new world beneath the surface of Tenerife. There is something for everyone, as we offer snorkelling tours for those who would rather stay at the surface.

  • Best for: Adventure seekers, marine life fans
  • Top spots: Abades Bya, Las Eras, El Balito, Montaña Amarilla

2. Hiking Mount Teide – Spain’s Highest Peak

Take a day to hike or cable-car up Mount Teide, the volcano that defines Tenerife’s landscape. This UNESCO World Heritage Site offers views above the clouds and some beautiful volcanic terrain with many hiking routes. It’s one of the best ways to experience the nature of the island. You can rent a car, take the bus, bike or walk up the mountain.

The way up is quite long but worth the time as it leads to multiple viewpoints, several settings, national parks, and eventually Mount Teide! The hiking routes take from an hour up to approximately 8 hours.

  • Best for: Nature lovers, hikers, photographers
  • Tip: Book cable car tickets in advance, especially during peak seasons.

3. Explore the local culture and Canarian cuisine

Tenerife is an island with a mixed culture because of its location and South American influences. Even though there are many Spanish traditions and foods, Tenerife also offers unique cultural experiences. Tenerife is home to unique wines grown on volcanic soil and traditional dishes you won’t find in mainland Spain. Join a guided wine and food tour or explore local guachinches (family-run taverns). Explore some restaurants in the local town, or visit well-known towns such as Puerto de la Cruz, La Laguna or Güímar.

  • Best for: Foodies, culture seekers
  • Try: Mojo sauces, papas arrugadas, goat cheese cheesecake

4. Explore natural beaches, towns and the Anaga Rural Park

Escape the crowds in this mountainous region in northern Tenerife. With ancient forests, beautiful and peaceful hiking trails, and traditional villages, Anaga is a hidden gem perfect for nature hikes and photography. Many beaches are located around the peaks on the coastlines. Benijo beach is beautiful, but also Playa Castro, where you can see a natural waterfall from the mountain. In the south, you can find Masca. Masca village is an ancient town between the valleys that offers viewpoints, restaurants and many hiking trails.

  • Best for: Off-the-beaten-path explorers
  • Don't miss: Taganana village and Benijo/Castro Beach

5. Take a Whale & Dolphin Watching Tour

Sail from the south coast (Costa Adeje or Los Cristianos) to spot resident pilot whales and dolphins year-round. Many tours are eco-certified and include snorkelling or a coastal cruise. You can also pick out a boat tour that includes lunch or snacks. We advice to take a look at the reviews since some boats are so stacked with people, it is difficult to even reach the railing of the boat.

  • Best for: Families, couples, wildlife lovers
  • Tip: Choose a small-boat tour for a more personal experience.

We can't offer all of them, but we can offer a unique diving experience!

We offer multiple options, from try dives and guided dives to 2 to 6-week programs! For more information, check our recreational options or courses! If you have more time and want a wonderful experience, sign up for our divemaster program!
