Master Diver Journey - From New York to Tenerife  Huge congratulations to Erik for his Master Diver Certification! At 58, Erik, famous youtuber and  marketing expert from New York decided it was time for a new adventure. He joined us in Abades, Tenerife, for a six-week Divemaster internship, ready to immerse himself in the underwater world. What unfolded was a journey of discovery, personal growth, and achievement — one that took a slightly different, but no less rewarding, path.

Diving Has No Age Limit

One of the great things about scuba diving is that it welcomes people of all ages. While the minimum age to begin the SSI Divemaster course is 18, there is no upper age limit — what matters most is your comfort in the water, and ability to swim. Erik, at 58, brought with him a strong swimming background and a lifelong love of the ocean and surfing. His story is a powerful reminder that age should never be seen as a restriction when it comes to pursuing new goals. Whether you're 18 or approaching 60, the underwater world is open to you — and we’re here to help you explore it safely and confidently.

Master Diver - Erik's Journey

Erik began his scuba journey with us from scratch with our Zero-to-Hero Program, earning his Open Water Diver certification here in Abades, Tenerife. He continued his training with specialties including Deep Diving, Night and Limited Visibility, Navigation, Perfect Buoyancy, and the React Right program (First Aid, CPR, and Oxygen Provider). He then successfully completed the Diver Stress & Rescue course — his favorite — where he learned how to handle challenging situations underwater. On top of all this, Erik tackled the Science of Diving course, even though it wasn’t required for his goal in the end. Originally on track to become a Divemaster, Erik realized that his interests and timeline aligned better with a different objective. He chose to pursue the SSI Master Diver rating instead and we were happy to support him with his decision.

Master Diver vs Dive Master

Master Diver vs Dive Master - What is the difference? The Master Diver recognition is the highest non-professional ratings in the SSI system. It reflects extensive experience and training, requiring at least five specialty courses, a minimum of 50 logged dives, and certification as a Stress & Rescue Diver. While it’s not a professional level like Divemaster, it marks a well-rounded and highly skilled recreational diver.

Erik's favorite moments from the training

- Erik dived at several beautiful dive sites with us. His personal favorite was El Balito, known for its crystal-clear waters and a stunning series of breathtaking caverns. It helped him significantly reduce his air consumption and become a more confident and competent diver. - The Diver Stress & Rescue Course stood out as one of his favorites — it challenged him in unexpected ways and gave him skills he never thought he’d have.

Erik’s journey is a great example of how we can adapt the Divemaster Internship, even if you choose a slightly different path along the way. Erik put in an impressive amount of work into his training, gained valuable skills, and left with a deep sense of accomplishment. We were proud to be part of his diving story. Erik left Tenerife with unforgettable memories, a wealth of knowledge, and the Master Diver title he truly earned.
